A Tailscale alternative
Nostr VPN vs Tailscale
Both connect your devices in a private network. Nostr VPN uses device keys and an encrypted mesh without a company account. Tailscale combines encrypted networking with a managed control service and team administration.
Choose Nostr VPN for independence.
You want a free, open-source private network without a company login or a dedicated coordination server to maintain. You may also want to try buying or selling bandwidth for Bitcoin.
Choose Tailscale for managed teams.
You want identity-provider integration, centrally managed access policies, device management, and commercial support.
The differences at a glance
| Capability | Nostr VPN | Tailscale |
|---|---|---|
| Identity & joining | Local Nostr device keys. An administrator approves signed join requests; no company account. Protocol ↗ | Sign in through an identity provider and manage your network through Tailscale. Setup ↗ |
| Coordination | Nostr-assisted discovery and signed membership lists. Devices connect over FIPS; configured discovery and transit infrastructure still matters. Architecture → | Tailscale operates the coordination service. Headscale is a separate, self-hosted alternative. Open-source approach ↗ |
| Private connections | Encrypted FIPS mesh with direct connections when possible and routes through FIPS neighbors when needed. WireGuard is supported for internet egress, not as the private-mesh protocol. | WireGuard encryption on direct connections, DERP relays, and Tailscale Peer Relays. Connection types ↗ |
| Private-network cost | Free software under the MIT license. No Nostr VPN subscription for your own mesh. Your hosting and internet costs still apply. | Personal: free for non-commercial use, up to six users and unlimited user devices. Business plans are paid; resource limits and charges also apply. Current pricing ↗ |
| Internet exits | Your own or trusted devices, a configured WireGuard connection, or experimental, metered Bitcoin exits from independent providers. | Your own exit nodes, plus an optional paid Mullvad exit-node add-on. Plans & add-ons ↗ |
| Private services | Device names such as server.nvpn, subnet routes, and private exit nodes. Feature overview ↗ | MagicDNS, subnet routers, exit nodes, and centrally configured access policies. Feature overview ↗ |
| Platforms | macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus the nvpn CLI. iOS has no paid exits or wallet; installer architectures vary. Platform details → | macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS, with additional platform options. Downloads ↗ |
| Source & administration | MIT-licensed application and admin-approved network membership. Evaluate it against your operational needs. License ↗ | Much of the client is open source; the hosted coordination server is closed source. Offers team and enterprise administration. Details ↗ |

What “without accounts” means
Nostr VPN creates a local cryptographic identity for your device. A network administrator decides which devices can join. You do not need a Google, Microsoft, or Nostr social account to get started.
This does not remove every dependency: devices still need working connectivity, and configured relays or transit peers can be involved. Protect your device keys and review who you approve. Read the security model.
Where Tailscale is a better fit
For an organization that needs single sign-on, detailed access policies, device-posture integrations, audit tooling, and vendor support, Tailscale is the more appropriate starting point. Check which plan includes your required features.
If your main requirement is self-hosting Tailscale’s control plane, also evaluate Headscale. Nostr VPN takes a different architectural approach; it does not join an existing Tailscale network.
Privacy and performance deserve specifics
Tailscale’s managed coordination does not mean it can read your encrypted mesh traffic. Both products encrypt device connections. Internet exit operators can still observe destinations and unencrypted traffic leaving the tunnel. Tailscale’s security explanation and ours describe the trust boundaries.

Common questions
Do I need Bitcoin to use Nostr VPN?
No. Connecting your own devices is free and does not require a wallet. Bitcoin is used only for the optional paid-exit marketplace.
Can Nostr VPN replace Tailscale?
It can be an alternative for private device access, subnet routing, and exit-node use. It is a separate network, so you need to install it and enroll your devices. Validate the features and platforms your setup depends on before switching.
Try it with two devices.
Start with a private connection. No payment required.
